Dear Michael, all,
if you have a look at the process of reaching the aim TVI-curves on
press
you need a minimum of one curve that is applied.
That is the "correction-curve" or "calibration-curve" that corrects
the values on the plate and therefore on the press.
In practice you mostly have a linearization curve and a calibration
curve which means two times calculating
new tone values.
In some combinations this can lead to visible steps mostly in the
shadows of vignettes
which can be explained if you have a look at the resulting curves in
the shadows.
If you now imagine having a 8-Bit step in your data preparation e.g.
by creating TIFFs
from the RIP in 8-Bit and the two curves are applied to that 8-Bit
data you can imagine
the potential loss of tone values.
So we do not recommend to correct everything in the RIP but start
with a well
maintained press, platesetter and processor.
If you have to make huge corrections although everything works fine
one possibility is to deactivate the lin-curve (which mostly raises
tone values that are then decreased in the cal-state).
If you absolutely have to correct huge differences then we highly
recommend to control the resulting vignettes.
If every calculation step is done in 10,12 or even 16-Bit there
shouldn't be visible effects.
But controling the vignettes is always a good idea.
Hope that clarified my statement.
Kind regards
Claas
