Hi list members,
It's a great pleasure to read that the number of paper types has been expanded.
Also the standard profiles for Non Periodical screens will help us to explain
the different workflows and color gamuts.
A few years ago I requested the ECI to standardize or unify the description
of the GCR in the profile details.
In some profiles a 50% GCR is mentioned. In other the width and length for GCR
are specified.
The figures given there are just quoted from the software of profile
creation (here: Heidelbergs ColorTool).
I can't imagine that it's possible to describe Blackgeneration
universally with a few values (length, width, starting point, curve
shape, ...); different softwares use different approaches and results
can't be compared easily.
An approach could be the use of a set of standardized (RGB-)test-images
(gradients from gray to colorful, ..., patches with saturated colors).
Convert these images to CMYK and count afterwards the "amount of ink".
Annoying job - but help is available: take PerfX Image Ink™ free utility
from TGLC.

Is there any tool or system to compare the influence
of the GCR variables
such as width and length, starting point K (Cyan percentage or L value)?
This would help me to classify the different profiles and it could be a help
to explain GCR to designers and other less experienced people in the chain.
Any help is highly appreciated.
