Hello,
I'm a French visual artist working with silk-screen printing seeking for advice.
When I convert my RGB files to CMYK, I lose a lot of color data and radiance.
I use the Web coated swop 2006 profile to convert from RGB to CMYK.
Which colorimetric profile should I use to reduce data loss during conversion?
What about converting with a “multichannel” profile?
Apparently it's also possible to use "Edit/Convert to profile/Custom CMYK", but I don't know what the values to be assigned correspond to.
I work in 2, 3 or 4 color process using layer separation in Photoshop. I then recreate my CMYK manually by making my own inks. Sometimes modifying them. For example, I use fluorescent colors or a dark blue instead of a cyan....
Once the conversion is made, the CMYK profile that i use should thus be wide enough so that my simulations are as close as possible to the rendering I will get with my inks.
Thank you for very much for your help
Good morning.
I was wondering if somebody else already experienced and solved this problem, as well.
We built, dedicated to creative agencies, a specific color settings and pdf export couple for certain production files in which we manage ourselves the RGB to CMYK conversion. It’s almost a late binding workflow before sending the final PDF to our printers.
So, all raster images remain in a specific RGB color space while Benday and vectors are still in CMYK.
So far, we did have any issue, but we recently received a document with a Spot Color template in it.
And when we checked it, it appeared it had been tagged on the Alternate Color Space with an ICC profile (no more specific indication).
We tried to find why without any success.
But we also experienced the same after many tests in In Design and Illustrator by creating a simple vector shape to which we added a Spot Color from the latest Pantone library.
The PDF export has no color conversion except an OI and OC for the PDF itself.
And despite all the color swatches we use, the result is equal.
The only difference lies when we use a PDF Export Preset which converts colors to the destination.
In such a way, the Spot Color uses the CMYK mode as by default Alternate Color Space.
How is it possible?
Would you have any idea?
Thanks!
Axel

Hallo Andreas.
It’s what I saw in the last draft about potential word issues.
Page 153.
Maybe Hint rather than TIPP, because IMHO, TIP has only one P.
“Hinweis”.
Page 156.
Using S as capital seems not to be an error because is it widely wrote like this in many documentation: Spot Color.
Best.

Subject: [ECI-EN] Fogra test profile for metal decoration printing
Dear members of the DPWG and ECI-members,
Although “D” stands for Digital I would like to share with you the recently published test profile “Metal-Printing_MPC1_FOGRA60”.
You can find the characterization data and the ICC profile here:
https://fogra.org/en/downloads/work-tools/characterisation-data
Thankfully, Florian Süßl (ECI) provided the ICC profile in the known manner, so you can share your feedback (naming, separation, gamut mapping etc.) here or directly at the ECI mailing list.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Andreas Kraushaar
PS: I also added my notes from the recent ISO meeting below to give you some more background. We managed to sort out the issues (the aim values of yellow have been refined in the last minute).

Betreff: ISO News
Dear DPWG members,
This year TC130 meetings will be held all digital/online. The WG3 meetings have been spread across four meetings with individual topics. So you can expect the ISO news over the coming weeks (next meeting will be held on Nov 10th focusing on ISO 12647-2).
Yesterday we focussed on ISO 12647-9 (Metal decoration offset printing). The document was approved as DIS and the comments were resolved. Since there were also technical comments the document will be balloted for FDIS before we can expect final publication early next year. Based on the available aims (CIELAB and TVI) and related printing samples (e.g. thankfully provided by Pirlo and modelled by GMG) we have tried to create characterization data. In that process we found some issues in the actual aims so we proposed to change some of the colour aims (and were not able to provide characterisation data and ICC profiles). Another challenge is the very dark aim CIEL (lightness) of the black primary being CIEL*=5 (for MPC2) and CIEL*=8 (MPC3/4) respectively. In the meeting minor changes of the aim values were agreed and we plan to provide characterization data for MPC1 (“White coated metal with the CIELAB aims being CIELAB=84+-4, -2 +-2, -6 +-2), potentially becoming FOGRA60.
If you are interested in further tests just let us know

Spectralcalc iccGPU™ introduces new possibilities for offset color
separation.
Published for commercial use at: https://cielab.xyz/spectralcalc_en.php
The first year of use is usually free.
iccGPU uses a graphics accelerator whenever possible
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoBvvbN2r6s> for the first time in the
history of computer color management, so the GPU is in the name.
The clear step-by-step design of profiles allows the color technologist to
control the process with the help of tables as deeply as no program can
intervene at any intermediate stage. In fact, the colorist becomes a
co-author of the programmer when creating the separation profile.
I made three color separation profiles for Fogra 39 in Spectralcalc iccGPU:
ISO Coated v2 Perceptual Skintones iccGPU
<https://cielab.xyz/forum/download/file.php?id=1200> - for maximum black
width, a fundamental exception is made in the Perceptual table to
achieve traditional
skintones with a minimum of black ink. The Relative colorimetric table does
not exclude the maximum black width for skin like it does in the Perceptual
table.
ISO Coated v2 Heavy GCR iccGPU
<https://cielab.xyz/forum/download/file.php?id=1199> - profile with maximum
black width and Heavy GCR generation for monochrome and achromatic images.
ISO Coated v2 BTAC 240 iccGPU
<https://cielab.xyz/forum/download/file.php?id=1198> is a profile with
maximum width and blended black generation with the lowest possible offset
lightness of a blend of achromatic super black (~ 60-42-38-100), but
TIL=300 in chromatic colors. For any photographic image, except for
skintones and achromatic, for them - the first and second profiles are
better suited.
Idealliance specifications are similar to ISO.
All three profiles use magenta and cyan inks UCA and yellow anti-UCA to
achieve the best possible print contrast with separations from the profiles
shown. All profiles in the Relative tables use a very special maximum black
ink width, which allows you to extract the highest possible pure saturated
color from process printing. Wherever possible, the third contaminating
color ink is replaced by black, which has less effect on the reduction of
saturation and only adjusts the lightness. Thus, all 4 colors are found in
color separation almost only in balance neutral and weakly saturated
near-neutral colors close to it.
In the creation of non-colorimetric tables Perceptual and Saturation, the
unique capabilities of the chromatic adaptation algorithm CIECAM02 are
used. The Perceptual Skintones profile makes skin a little purer when
separating with Perceptual Rendering Intent. RGB colorants are usually
lighter than CMY colorants, so the Perceptual and Saturation tables, to
preserve the saturation of the original, slightly lower the lightness of
the colorants to maintain their maximum saturation in darker CMYK process
colors. This perceptual gamut mapping is shown schematically in the
screenshot <https://cielab.xyz/thumbnails/TwoDimensionalTaylor.png>.

Hi Andy
Just downloaded the beta Fogra 60 profile for Metal Dec MPC1. On checking the profile I see that it does not reflect the latest amendment to the draft standard for the Lab of the yellow.
The profile is: L76 a-5 b78
The latest draft is L79 a-6 b88
This 'new' yellow should increase the gamut volume a little __. One further observation, the TAC is 300%. I think a TAC of 260% with a increased GCR may be a better approach for metal decoration.

Dear members of the DPWG and ECI-members,
Although "D" stands for Digital I would like to share with you the recently=
published test profile "Metal-Printing_MPC1_FOGRA60".
You can find the characterization data and the ICC profile here:
https://fogra.org/en/downloads/work-tools/characterisation-data
Thankfully, Florian S=FC=DFl (ECI) provided the ICC profile in the known ma=
nner, so you can share your feedback (naming, separation, gamut mapping etc=
.) here or directly at the ECI mailing list.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Andreas Kraushaar
PS: I also added my notes from the recent ISO meeting below to give you som=
e more background. We managed to sort out the issues (the aim values of yel=
low have been refined in the last minute).

Dear DPWG members,
This year TC130 meetings will be held all digital/online. The WG3 meetings =
have been spread across four meetings with individual topics. So you can ex=
pect the ISO news over the coming weeks (next meeting will be held on Nov 1=
0th focusing on ISO 12647-2).
Yesterday we focussed on ISO 12647-9 (Metal decoration offset printing). Th=
e document was approved as DIS and the comments were resolved. Since there =
were also technical comments the document will be balloted for FDIS before =
we can expect final publication early next year. Based on the available aim=
s (CIELAB and TVI) and related printing samples (e.g. thankfully provided b=
y Pirlo and modelled by GMG) we have tried to create characterization data.=
In that process we found some issues in the actual aims so we proposed to =
change some of the colour aims (and were not able to provide characterisati=
on data and ICC profiles). Another challenge is the very dark aim CIEL (lig=
htness) of the black primary being CIEL*=3D5 (for MPC2) and CIEL*=3D8 (MPC3=
/4) respectively. In the meeting minor changes of the aim values were agree=
d and we plan to provide characterization data for MPC1 ("White coated meta=
l with the CIELAB aims being CIELAB=3D84+-4, -2 +-2, -6 +-2), potentially b=
ecoming FOGRA60.
If you are interested in further tests just let us know

Dear Michiel,
There will never be M1 characterization data for the "older web offset"
profiles. Your old M0 profiles should work perfectly fine under your new
"D50" lamps.

Subject: [ECI-EN] Question about M1 measurment conditions
Good morning,
I have a question about the measurement conditions in web- and sheet offset
production.
We print on a great amount of papers in web offset: standard newsprint,
improved newsprint, SC, SC-B, MFC, LWC-Improved, LWC-standard, coated and
uncoated.
In sheetfed offset we print on coated and uncoated paper.
With the arrival of the new M1 measurement condition, we replaced all our
illuminant A lamps into D50 lamps. The problem is, we don't have M1
measurement references for the older web offset profiles.
So now we have new lamps (M1), a capable measurement device (M0 + M1) but we
have mostly M0 reference values (exceptions are the newer profiles F51, F52
and F54).
Will there come a publication with new M1 references for the older web
offset profiles? And when yes: is there already a date of publication?
Thank you in advance.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Michiel Verbeemen
