Hello guys,
I’m a student at the BU Wuppertal in Germany. I’m working on a project for
Prof. Dr. Stefan Brües, with the main goal to create a new workingspace
which includes the colorspaces of mobile devices like apple iphones/ipads.
Therefore my question, how can i create a new/own workingspace? Which tools
i need and how can i do this. My idea is it to do it like the „PRMG“, to
find the highest common <http://www.dict.cc/englisch-deutsch/common.html>
factor <http://www.dict.cc/englisch-deutsch/factor.html> of the colorspaces
of mobile devices and to create the workingspace on this basis. Could
someone help me with more informations? Further i would to know, how could i
create a linear relation between the primary colors in my own workingspace
to get a neutral grey, when my primary colors have the same value? And how i
create a equidistant workingspace?
Additional i would to know, why is the gamma value and the whitepoint (D50
or D65) in working spaces fixed? What are the benefits?
And what are the benefits of a workingspace with a linear relation between
the primary colors and of equidistant between the colors?

Hello Martin,
I was not aware that eciRGB_v2 does not contain the colorspaces of mobile devices -
perhaps it would be an interesting approach to first identify where the mobile device
Color spaces gamut does exceed the gamut of eciRGB_V2 before trying to reinvent the
wheel…..

it's obvious that you have problems with essential principles of color
management; i suggest you read some good books (from Bruce Fraser, p.e.)
and post your questions to color sync group, as there are some really great
minds and are focused more to color managemt than this group; btw, your
problem was widely discussed in color sync group.

I just did some Gamut visualization in Chromic Color Think Pro and compared eciRGB_V2 to
an iPhone Display profile I found (from a trustworthy source).
To make things short:
The gamut of mobile devices is well inside the eciRGB_V2 color space.
So I would recommend to just use eciRGB_V2 as Working Color Space.

Thanks, i already profiled mobile devices and compered it with the eciRGB_v2
(see screenshot)
Green: Samsung Galaxy S5
Blue: Tablet Sony Xepria Z2
Red: eciRGB_v2
I have tested much more mobile devices and the results look the same like
with these two devices. So i think a new workingspace would be necessary
because of new display technologies like AMOLED etc.
But you’re right, the old iphones/ipads fit into the eciRGB_v2, but with the
Generation later iPhone 5/iPad 4 it looks like above.

Hi all,
I have performed multiple tests on portable device and this is my
impression :
The Ipad and other Apple devices try to match the sRGB standard.
Google Nexus series try to match the sRGB standard.
Samsung devices are the largest color space of portable device, the color
space is bigger than EciRgbV2 color space.

For the measurement :
• Eizo color navigator (need Eizo monitor).
• dispcalGUI (opensource, free).
• And others….
Warning, If you use Aquafadas or Adobe DPS, all the pictures are
automatically converted to sRGB at export.
If ou develop your own application (objectiveC or JAVA code), it depends
on the device.
My opinion :
The EciRgvV2 color space is not good for working with portable device.

Why not ProPhoto RGB (ROMM RGB)?
Some manufacturers of display technologies are diverging from sRGB. But since they
aren't converging on something else, any chosen intermediate space meant for such a
class of products will necessarily need to be large.
That means the intermediate space itself won't approximate the color space of a
specific device. Until there's color management in the device (e.g. as an iOS and
Android API) to compensate for the difference between intermediate and display spaces,
such an intermediate space is unsuitable for encoding images delivered to the device.
Further, we also need a reliable way to determine the display color space of a specific
device with sufficient accuracy (i.e. not perfect or lab quality, but "helpful"
accuracy rather than "oh nice we just made things worse, thanks a lot"),
otherwise color management in the device can't help. And this goes not just for mobile
devices, but it's still a problem with desktop displays which routinely contain bogus
chromaticity information in EDID and don't contain tone response information at all.
So I'm not really understanding what problem a new intermediate space is trying to
solve.

You are a little late to the party. This is not a new area and it would be a shame to go
off and do your own thing when so much has already been done both in standards committees
and in industry trade groups.
Specifically there is work ongoing in ISO TC42. ISO 22028, Photography and graphic
technology - Extended colour encodings for digital image storage, manipulation and
interchange, lays out the basic requirements for color spaces. TC42 is also doing work in
conjunction with IEC re mobile devices (both image capture and displays).

such a colorspace, as we already have ProPhoto standardized through
ISO and widely available in the graphic arts ?
Both iOS and Android do not support colormanagement on system level.

I think the ProPhoto RGB is to big for current colorspaces of mobile
devices. We want to improve the rendering intent 0 (perceptual) like the
PRMG (Perceptual Reference Medium gamut) does it in printing.
This all is a seminar for us students and maybe there are lots of
solutions, but we also try to learn something, for example how you can
create a workingspace.
In our different projects in our study we developed for example a tool
with a GUI for profiling displays and cameras in particular of mobile
devices.
We also know, that colormanagemente isn’t supported yet on iOS and
Android, if any only on application level.
I'm just a student interested in this topic and trying to learn in a
practical way.

For experimental purposes, I would do following:
- - characterize different wide gamut mobile displays
- - average and smooth the characterization-data
- - convert the characterization-data to an Lab-image (e.g. with ColorThink)
- - enhance the saturation in photoshop with a* b* gradation curves
(This allows e.g. to fix the saturation in the tertiary colors and the
skin tones)
- - convert the image back to characterization data (e.g. with ColorThink)
- - creaate an profile from the characterization-data
The result will be an experimental workingspace, which shares in
gradation and skintones the sRGB appearance of mobile displays, which
has a gamut form typical for wide gamut mobile displays and has a
gamut size bigger than the averaged wide gamut displays.
