Dear Frens,
the difference between PSO Coated v3 and ISO coated v2 is that PSO Coated v3 regards the
UV-enabled fluorescence of papers containing optical brightening agents (OBA). Roger
mentioned skills: The printer should have an appropriate workflow, i.e. be able to create
a brightened colour proof, to view under lighting conditions with a defined UV portion and
to measure the fluorescence effect (M1 mode) with an appropriate spectrophotometer. Then
the same viewing conditions should be available in your company for the visual comparison
of colour proofs and prints.
But in packaging printing, folding boxboards and other white substrates mostly does not
contain OBA. So you should be safe with ISO coated v2, i.e. there is no reason to change
the profile or conditions. Nevertheless, there are DeviceLink profiles to switch between
v2 and v3 profiles easily.
Best regards,
Dieter Kleeberg

It depends on the printers you work with and how you prepare your PDFs in the first
place.
It’s possible to detect the images being ISO Coated v2 in your PDFs and to convert them
appropriately to PSO Coated v3 on import.
But not all printers have the skills to do so or are willing to do so, in my very humble
experience.

Subject: [ECI-EN] PSO Coated v3 or ISO coated v2
Dear …,
As I’m working at a graphic design agency where we most of the time create packaging
designs for our clients, I was wondering which colour profile we should use as default
CMYK
colour profile. At this moment all our applications use ISO coated v2 as default CMYK
profile.
But on your website I see a new CMYK colour profile is available for offset printing.
Should we switch to PSO Coated v3 or stay at ISO coated v2 for the moment?
Kind regards,
Frens Veldstra
