Hello all,
ECI recently published at
http://www.eci.org/en/projects/fred15
materials for testing colormanagement workflows according the new ISO
12647-2:2013 standard. This includes characterization-data und
ICC-profiles for coated and uncoated papers in offset printing.
One interesting topic is for me the question of the M1 paperwhite
characterization for "premium Coated".
The new ISO 12647-2:2013 defines the M1 paperwhite as L* 95 a*1 b*-4
- From my experience, the average of the most premium coated papers for
offset printing has a M1 paperwhite in the area of e.g. L*95 a*1,5 b*-6
The Fred15 project delivers 3 different beta versions of
characterization-data for premium coated:
1) Spot on data (spectral (!!) data created by Heidelberg
The header of the characterization data does not state, if it is M1 or
M0 data. Paperwhite is L* 95 a*1 b*-4
2) FOGRA51 beta M1 L* a* b* based data
paperwhite is L*95 a*1,5 b*-6
3) FOGRA51 beta M0 L* a* b* based data
paperwhite is L* 94,89 a*1 b*-4
- From my testings with proofs and prints under new ISO 13655:2009
reference lightning, it is important, that we have in standard
characterization a realistic M1 paperwhite, which matches the average
of the real world paper type as close as possible. From my current
state of experience, I would prefer FOGRA51 M1 data
(ideally in a spectral version as the spoton data from Heidelberg,
Spectral characterization-data are allowing - especially for packaging
- - much better simulation of the interaction of CMYK and spotcolors in
printing.)
Furthermore I would like to see an addendum or even a revision of ISO
12647-2:2013 to have M1 whitepoint included, which are reflection the
average of a given paper type / paper category.
Concerning hardcopy proofing, I would like to see a recommendation of
a M1 paperwhite for semi matte proofing papers, which is very near to
M1 L*95 a*1,5 b*-6
Best regards
Jan-Peter Homann
