Dear collegues,
Please find as follows some information about our workspace on the
ECI server and the timetable.
We have a restricted area on the ECI webserver for sharing test files
and test results.
Access to the fileserver
----------------------------
Server:
213.160.9.66
User:
eci_wg_offsetprofiles
Password:
members_only
Content
----------------
The workspace consists of three sections (directories)
- "Chardata_and_Profiles"
This directory contains two subdirectories for the printing
conditions "SC" and "Coated". Per printing condition you will find
the respective characterization data and profiles for testing. Please
upload your profile candidates to this area.
- "Test_Material"
Additional test material is more than welcome - If you want to add
material please create a new subdirectory and upload your test
material to the respective directory. Please honor as a general term
of use (license) that all material is for internal use in our working
group only. Please note that some subdirectories such as the one for
the "VPR" contain special license text.
- "Test_Results"
During the test we certainly will find good and bad results. In order
to easily share individual results with the working group please
upload samples of your findings to respectively named subdirectories
along with a text file explaning your finding.
Timetable
---------------
The initial schedule says profiles available for download by the end
of October.
In order to make sure that our profiles are thoroughly tested I
suppose that this is not realistic. In addition I would like to
strongly recommend test prints with the final release candidate(s) in
order to make sure that some of the print related issues are ok (GCR
issues).
For that reason I would like to propose this still challenging schedule:
- start creating and testing profiles
today, October 24th
- release candidates ready
Friday, November 3rd
- data of test forme sent to printers
Tuesday, November 7th
- Test prints
Wednesday, November 8th through Friday 10th
- Evaluation of test prints
until Wednesday November 15th
- Decision on approval or further editing needed
And now - let's do it!

Dear Collegues,
first of all an important message for all of you participating in the
evaluation of the test prints:
Please submit your evaluation as soon as possible!
It is very important to finish the evaluation by the end of this week.
Regarding the test prints - please find attached two PDFs with a
quick evaluation of the Pruskil testprint (standard inking, sheet A).
The evaluation is based on the GrayCon on the left hand side on the
first sheet (flesh tones).
As you will see, the prints are excellent with regard to the CIELAB
aim values. Unfortunately the spread is too high (6).
Very interesting:
Our edited aim values for green and blue seem to work very good;-)
dE ISOamd1
green: 5,3
blue: 6,11
dE FOGRA39
green: 1,84
blue: 1,30
Best regards,
Florian

Dear collegues,
In order to prepare an unbiased quality assessment I would like to
propose the following:
Please let me know if you ...
… would prefer another approach.
… would like to change the assessment criteria:
Procedure
----------------------
(1) Sascha Bugai will send printed samples to all working group
members who expressed to participate in the evaluation.
these samples include different inking versions: ISO compliant,
higher/lower Black density, disbalanced CMY
(2) I will prepare an Excel sheet with the following criteria (see
below)
(3) Each member's feedback will be collected *anonymously*
(4) Per profile version (A, B, C, D) we will fill in the respective
rating
per criterion rating with points (0-5) where 0 points means bad
result - 5 points: excellent
(5) Excel sheets sent back to me
(6) Overview with the collected *anonymous* results sent via our
mailing list
like Version A: x of z possible points, B: y of z possible points
Assessment criteria
---------------------------
(1) Details/definition (Zeichnung/Kontrast)
details reproduced with good definition (5 points) vs. flat detail
reproduction (0 points)
(2) Smooth gradients (glatte Verläufe)
smooth gradients (5 points) vs. distinct posterization effects (0
points)
(3) *Gray balance* (Graubalance/Farbstabilität)
will be assessed in the print samples with different inking
(higher/lower black density, disbalanced CMY)
0 points: gray with distinct color cast
5 points: almost no color cast
(4) *Color stability* (Farberhalt/Vergrauung)
Unchanged color vs. e.g. less saturation/grayish colors
heavy GCR at least in the past caused problems like 'gray islands',
sudden shift to gray in gradients of dark colors
0 points: image colors changed (e.g. grayish)
5 points: image colors almost unchanged
(5) Reproduction of highly saturated colors (Gesättigte Farben/
Differenzierung)
This criterion reflects the rising importance of digital camera data
with highly saturated colors (blue tent 'Otto' image)
0 points: flat detail reproduction/ definition
5 points: excellent detail reproduction with clearly reproduced
colors/details

Dear collegues,
Going through the list of criterion I would like to add a general
rating plus space for notes explaining the rating.
We have criteria that might cause identical numerical results of two
profiles: e.g. profile A good in details, but bad smoothness and
profile B vice versa. The additional rating gives us the opportunity
to express which profile we prefer.
If this is ok with you I will add that six' criterion to our list.
All the best,

Hi Mr Suessl
sorry, that you all didn`t hear to much from me, i was the last to weeks in carribean sea, now i m back home again!
the Assessment criterias seems to be very smart. To do an evaluation together with the prints and the excel sheet with this specified criterias is an amazing way to do, i think. ok!

Rümlang, 13.11.2006
Anbei unsere Ausführungen zum Profilaufbau.
Profilierungssoftware
unsere Tests erstellt (Basisdaten VPR).
Regel relativ farbmetrisch besser. Man sollte aber keine Empfehlung abgeben
die fehlendes KnowHow kaschiert.
Tonwertzunahmen
Profil bereits 2% Spreizung aufweisen.
