Dear collegues,
Please find as follows some information about our workspace on the
ECI server and the timetable.
We have a restricted area on the ECI webserver for sharing test files
and test results.
Access to the fileserver
----------------------------
Server:
213.160.9.66
User:
eci_wg_offsetprofiles
Password:
members_only
Content
----------------
The workspace consists of three sections (directories)
- "Chardata_and_Profiles"
This directory contains two subdirectories for the printing
conditions "SC" and "Coated". Per printing condition you will find
the respective characterization data and profiles for testing. Please
upload your profile candidates to this area.
- "Test_Material"
Additional test material is more than welcome - If you want to add
material please create a new subdirectory and upload your test
material to the respective directory. Please honor as a general term
of use (license) that all material is for internal use in our working
group only. Please note that some subdirectories such as the one for
the "VPR" contain special license text.
- "Test_Results"
During the test we certainly will find good and bad results. In order
to easily share individual results with the working group please
upload samples of your findings to respectively named subdirectories
along with a text file explaning your finding.
Timetable
---------------
The initial schedule says profiles available for download by the end
of October.
In order to make sure that our profiles are thoroughly tested I
suppose that this is not realistic. In addition I would like to
strongly recommend test prints with the final release candidate(s) in
order to make sure that some of the print related issues are ok (GCR
issues).
For that reason I would like to propose this still challenging schedule:
- start creating and testing profiles
today, October 24th
- release candidates ready
Friday, November 3rd
- data of test forme sent to printers
Tuesday, November 7th
- Test prints
Wednesday, November 8th through Friday 10th
- Evaluation of test prints
until Wednesday November 15th
- Decision on approval or further editing needed
And now - let's do it!

Dear collegues,
Please find a second version of the ISO Coated v2 *GCR 50* profile in
our workspace on the ftp server. (ISOcoated_v2_ECI_PO5_02.zip).
This profile is intended to check the options to successfully 'avoid
mid tone lightening of perceptual conversion' as it is caused by our
current profile ISOcoated.icc.
The new profile has been created using a new option of PrintOpen 5.2:
The gamut mapping settings provide a new option 'global darker/
lighter' with values from -5 (darker) to +5 (lighter).
The respective value used in the new profile is '-2'
Important note:
The profile was created using a special software version and *not*
the shipping version.
Tests with the shipping version of PrintOpen 5.2 showed too heavy
impact on the midtone gradation in the case characterization data
with large gamut (as in FOGRA39). Even the smallest value -1 resultet
in a CMYK image with *darker* midtones than in the result of a
profile conversion 'relative colorimetric with black point
compensation'.
Very curious to get your feedback!

I loaded down the corrupted ICCs. Know it works perfect with the zipfiles.

I can use the profiles in Photoshop CS2 Mac. Did you download the zip
files, or the original (corrupted) ICC profiles?

Dear Mr. Hilmer,
Thank you very much for uploading the two skin tone images in the
directory 'HQ_Haut'.
Do you see a chance to upload a verion without JPEG compression (LZW,
ZIP).
The two images show significant JPEG artefacts making it almost
impossible to judge separation quality with regard to shadow skin
tone etc.
Thank you very much in advance,
Florian Suessl

Dear Mr. Hilmer,
Thank you very much for uploading the two skin tone images in the
directory 'HQ_Haut'.
Do you see a chance to upload a verion without JPEG compression (LZW,
ZIP).
The two images show significant JPEG artefacts making it almost
impossible to judge separation quality with regard to shadow skin
tone etc.
Thank you very much in advance,
Florian Suessl

Dear Colleques,
i think the naming convention from Florian Süssl is very senceful. Congratulations on this place and my Owing fto his work! Also including the TIC is helpful and necessary. May be it can be also included the GCR and UCR Value (in an additional information text?)
But what i want to say is, that we have to publish the new Profile(s) very soon. There are, i think, to much rumors and Uncertainty on the market in this moment about 39L, 27L and ISOcoated and so on.
By the way, All Tests what we did with 39L in Print and Proof were very successful and satisfying. Last Test was in the actual Fogra CTP Symposium with Proof and Print. There is a comparing with Fogra 39L. 39L is working!
So we should hurry, so long
with best regards from Munich

Dear collegues,
It was not my intention to start a discussion already finished.
Unfortunately I did not remember the branding decision according the
"ECI" in the profile name. Hanno Hoffstadts hint, that profiles with
matching external and internal name convention makes life of users
easier, is also important. Nevertheless I am not quite sure, if it is
necessary to making advertising within a profile name (My statement,
should not start a new discussion).
So finally I agree with Florian's naming convention. (So we can stop
this thread here. 8-) ).
Best regards,
Karsten Ackmann

Dear collegues,
This mail is the starting point for our joint efforts to create new
versions of the ECI Offset Profiles.
Dear non German speaking collegues:
I apologize for the following lines being German only. I simply did
not manage to write this text in English too. But I will try to
organize an English translation as soon as possible. As I will meet
with you in person next week at the Berlin ECI meeting we certainly
will have the opportunity to keep you updated. As soon as our work
starts we certainly will be able to switch to a language suitable for
all of us (Elie, probably it will not be French;-). However I am
confident that you know most of the content in the following mail
(e.g. about the Berlin ISO amendment, known issues with the existing
profiles and chardata, etc.).
Thanks,
Florian
now switching to German ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
Liebe Kollegen
habe versucht, alle wichtigen Infos zusammenzustellen, damit alle
Beteiligten denselben Informationsstand haben und wir uns
schnellstmöglich an die Arbeit machen können. Zudem sollten wir uns
nicht in Diskussionen über bereits getroffene Entscheidungen
verlieren.
---------------------------------------
Beim ECI-Meeting Ende 2005 in München hatten einige Mitglieder
verursacht. Im Nachfolger von FOGRA27 wurden die bekannten
Farbbereiche korrigiert, d.h. den in zahlreichen Drucken ermittelten
Farborten angepasst (Stichworte Cyan-Problem, Blau- und
Grauwiedergabe).
bestimmt, also nicht allgemein zugänglich. Die Zugangsdaten sende ich
in separater Mail.
gestrichen)
in ISO Coated zu hoch bei RGB 0/0/0
- Abrisse in Farbauszügen vermeiden (Profil)
Haut)
mitunter sehr unruhig (Abrisse, Solarisation)
-Möglichst keine Mitteltonaufhellung bei 'perzeptiver'
Farbkonvertierung (Profil)
Offsetprofilen (siehe u.a. Lizenzbedingungen ATS Doku, ...)
Organisatorisches
--------------------------
Zum Abschluss noch zwei organisatorische Aspekte
- Kommunikation
Die Kommunikation im Arbeitskreis läuft über diese Mailingliste [WG
Offset-Profiles].
- Test Material
- VPR (Lizenzbedingungen beachten!)
- ATS ECI-RGB Bilder
- weitere vom Arbeitskreis verwendete Testmotive
- Test Results
... um Beispielseparationen allen AK Mitgliedern schnell zur
Verfügung stellen zu können
- Test Profiles
Herzlichst,
Florian Süßl
